In addition to volunteering their time to teach other lawyers at presentations, GWM attorneys have authored several legal publications. In addition to regular contributions to Wisconsin Lawyer, For the Defense, and other bar journals, our attorneys have written the “Wrongful Death” chapter in the Law of Damages in Wisconsin, the Wisconsin chapter in Morton Daller’s Tort Law Desk Reference: A Fifty State Compendium, and the Wisconsin chapter of the DRI’s Excess and Umbrella Insurance State-by-State Compendium.
The State Bar of Wisconsin named Gass Weber Mullins as the 2014 Pro Bono Organization of the Year. The State Bar agreed with the nomination from the State Public Defender’s office that “Gass Weber Mullins’ readiness to quietly, yet steadily, take on the unglamorous cases—to the tune of many hundreds of volunteer hours—has impressed the Wisconsin State Public Defender as worthy of recognition.” Year after year, our attorneys dedicate hundreds of hours to pro bono matters in both our state and federal courts.
For more than 10 years, David Turek has been a co-coordinator of the regional high school mock trial tournament sponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin. This event showcases high school students from around the Milwaukee area trying a case in front of actual judges and attorneys. For a profile of the Milwaukee regional tournament, click here.
We have provided financial support to multiple local charities such as the MACC Fund, Playground Warriors, Meta House, United Way, Dream Bikes, Peacemakers Project Miami, Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, Marquette Alumni Board and Catholic Charities.
In addition, our attorneys give their time through service on the boards of community organizations such as Rocketship Education (a national charter school organization) and Milestones Programs for Children.
The Milwaukee County District Attorney appointed John Franke to serve as the special prosecutor to investigate potential charges against three Milwaukee police officers related to the in-custody death of Derek Williams. The matter was extremely important to the parties and our community.
John invested hundreds of hours of pro bono time and presented thorough and well-regarded case to the inquest jury.
